A company can have several signature programs – high-investment, high-visibility programs that help you demonstrate your purpose and elevate your brand. I’m making that sound really easy, but unfortunately, I must crush your dreams: it’s not. Corporate Citizenship outlines five critical success factors for flagship programs that can help you discover and act on your true strategic intent: purpose, space, resources, impact and story.

While each company’s volunteer program has (or should have) specific impact targets that it aims to achieve, the society-wide, shared mission of all our programs is to break down barriers between people through the Transformative Approach to employee volunteering. Volunteering itself is not the point. Volunteering that takes people into contexts where they are invited to challenge their assumptions, guided through the experience that accompanies this challenge, and invited into critical reflection following the experience is a means to an end. The end we’re going for? Perspective transformation. Mindset shift. This is the work all of us are doing together.

More philosophically, do companies ask themselves why they want to do corporate volunteering in the first place? Are they just following a trend or do they want to do it for different reasons? We believe that companies are part of society. I would challenge companies to ask themselves if what they’re doing (including their CSR teams) is making their company and the world a better place. Ultimately, employees will get a sense of purpose working for a company that is trying to solve societal issues; retaining talent. Companies that hold CSR closer to the heart are closer to the heart of employees as well. When you align these two things as a company, you can really change society through corporate volunteering.

There’s something that’s been rattling around my head over the last 18 months or so. And it’s that the pandemic brought families together in their homes for a prolonged period of time, so children were closely watching their parents cope with social issues at a scale no one had seen before. And these children saw their parents step up, give back and get involved in new and meaningful ways. I can’t help but think this will create a more goodness-oriented generation who will have learned these behaviors around collective thinking and action. More companies are going to need to think critically about this as these children grow up and become the next generation of consumers, employees, leaders and investors! No longer is social impact a Millennial, Gen Z or even Gen Alpha thing. It’s an everyone thing.
